way back when (early 70's) our neighbor used to give us a loaf of quick bread that she called orange fruit cake,
it was made with those orange slices that are like gum drops.
anybody have a recipe for something like this?
Here is a link that might be useful: Orange Slice Bread
I made a cake recipe like that. Oh boy, was it good! And sweeeeeeet!
My mama used to make orange slice cake for Christmas every year. I can dig up the recipe if you want it. Let me know.
It has the orange slice candy, nuts, coconut, etc. Real good and rich.
Ben: I'd love to have your Mama's recipe... please!
1 box dates chopped
1 lb. orange slice candy
2 cups nuts (pecans)
1 cup cocount
2 cups sugar
2 sticks margarine (or butter)
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour (save out 1/2 cup flour to roll nuts, candy and dates in
1/2 teaspoon baking soda (put in buttermilk)
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 cups confectioners sugar
1 cup orange juice
Cream butter and sugar, add eggs one at a time. Add flour and buttermilk (with soda mixed in) alternately. Roll nuts, candy, cococut and dates in 1/2 cup flour and add to creamed mixture. Pour into greased and floured tube pan.
Cook at 250 for 2 1/2 hours. Mix 2 cups confectioners sugar and orange juice and pour over cake while hot. Let stay in pan overnight.
Thank you! I will give it a try -- at the very least for Christmas.
