Quartz and Slate Stone?

Is there a big difference between quartz and slate stone? Is one better than the other. We are deciding between the 2 for our ledgerstone on our spa. Will one hold up to water better than the other?

A lot depends on where you are, temperature changes, stone hardness, water chemistry, etc...
