travertine pool deck holes

ktd42August 30, 2012

We had a new travertine pool deck installed recently. We are seeing many tiles with holes larger that 1 inch - some 3+ inches (the holes don't go all the way through the tile - but are often at least half way through tile). We expected some small holes and imperfections but these are larger then we expected. Is this normal?

Should we replace these tiles? And if we do - does that involve just lifting the tile and inserting a new one or is there more to the process?

Should these holes be grouted? Or some other treatment?

Should we expect more large holes to appear?

Any recommendations and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

We've had our travertine around our pool for 6 seasons now. Yes, normal to have pits and voids, some are larger than others. We just chose the side that had the lesser of them. Wouldn't think grouting them would be good, especially if you have a freeze and thaw cycle. Holes won't get and bigger or appear if they are not already there. If they are just set in sand, yes, remove and flip them over.
Here's some photos of ours. You can see some voids in both photos.
