Kitchen layout - thoughts on 1st round

done_againMarch 20, 2014

I've posted a couple times before about moving the location of the kitchen to the DR and working with what's there and getting rid of the wood overload. We've decided to keep the kitchen where it is but remodel it from top to bottom. This is the 1st draft from the KD. It's a good start but we have a few areas of conern. The current cooktop is in front of a window so we really want to move it so we can have a proper hood above it. The room is 11'4" wide by 11'8" deep with 3 exterior walls.

Concerns:
Refrigerator too close to wall for door clearance
Only pantry moves to breakfast room (6-7 ft. away)
Dishwasher location (different run of cabinets than sink)
Easy reach base corner cabinets (blind/closed off corners better?)

Current kitchen layout and relation to 1st floor

Proposed layout

There is so much writing on the "current layout" it's hard to make heads or tails of it. I can read 11'4" across the back wall, but not the total of either side wall. Can you post all dimensions?

Is it necessary for the opening to the kitchen to be so small? You could open it up by increasing the opening on the left. Then, if you wish you wouldn't have to have angled cabinets at the end of the cabinet run on the right.

Why not move your sink under the other window by the DW? It would give more prep space nearer the range and would make a better work triangle.

IMHO, reaching into those cabinets at each corner could be difficult. Why not wrap them around onto the rear window wall and add more cabinets.

have you considered swapping the kitchen and breakfast room?

Moving the sink is something we've thought about. That would greatly increase the prep space. We have corner uppers now and think we would prefer the proposed layout. We are still undecided on that also.

Widening the opening even more would then open it to the formal DR. I'm not sure we would gain anything with that.

The current layout is to show the relation of the kitchen to the rest of the house. It's isolated but actually works okay for us. Moving it to the DR would be nice but much more work than we want to do. The breakfast room has too many doorways and such to work.

Is it possible to put a narrow pantry on the refrigerator and range wall without cramping things too much?

FIrst off, what's going to happen to the dining room and breakfast room. You can't isolate what's going on in the kitchen from that incredible redundancy.

The 2 eating spaces are redundant. We haven't been able to come up with a good way to use the 3 spaces. If the kitchen and DR are swapped we still end up with a breakfast room nearby. It's an unusual layout so we are trying to make the best of it.

Here's the entire 1st floor as it is today.

Do you have any suggestions on how to integrate everything better? We are open to ideas big and small at this point.

Do you need a formal DR and a breakfast room? Could you suffice with just one if the room was larger?

We don't need both a formal DR and breakfast room. We do use both regularly now and have no issue keeping both. If we could get one large DR and the kitchen we would have no issue with that. The breakfast room has a smaller 4 person table but the room is more of a pass through...double door to backyard and openings to foyer, DR, kitchen and sunken FR. It's very visible from the foyer and front door so the previous owners had bifold doors between the two.

Nothing has been done yet and it's much cheaper & easier to discuss the options now.
