Need design ideas for a back yard on a hill

nelson_ohioOctober 14, 2010

Hi everyone:

Not sure if this is the right forum for the question, since I want to build a stone patio, not a deck or porch. I'm looking to buy this house that's on a large (1+AC) ravine lot, the back yard has a 20ft drop over 60-75ft, I'm not going to build a deck, but want to do some retaining walls and a stone patio at the bottom. I would like to see as many pictures of designs out there so I can have a good idea of what I want, but most design pictures I have seen are just flat areas. Does anyone know where I can get some great pictures and ideas for something like this.

Thanks a lot.

Ohio must be really flat. It's hard for me to imagine you not having anything to look at around your area for inspiration. Come out to Cali for a vacation. Everyone has a sloped lot, but small space, so the retaining walls and landscaping are essential to get any joy or value out of your property.
Start by determining what you want to use the yard for. Are there multiple uses?

storage sheds
play space
outdoor kitchen
swimming pool

Make a simple plot plan layout and designate space for each function. Give ample transitional space for people to flow freely. Plan to build the retaining walls without moving too much dirt. You can create nice flat terraces by working with the existing grade. It is not really a good idea to bring in or take away very much soil. it could cause erosion or drainage issues with your entire lot.
