Help with Kitchen Lighting

acerSMarch 16, 2013

I need some help deciding what to do in my situation for lighting.

I will be knocking down that horrible drop ceiling/lighting. But the portion right above the countertop I cant remove. It has the HVAC running through it. So I want to know what should I be using for lighting in the center of the kitchen?

I dont think recessed lighting will work because the ceiling above the counters has the HVAC. And if I put recessed where the drop lighting used to be it would be real dark by the counters.

I was thinking of getting a large circular flushmount but Im not sure if it will be enough lighting. Other would be track lighting but I dont know that will look.

Have you confirmed how much extra room there is between the drywall and the duct work in the ceiling? There may be an opportunity to install recessed lighting above the counters, especially if you explore LED options that might be much lower profile.

TorontoTim: I have not, I guess I should give it a try and check it out. Although I dont think there will be enough space, the ceilings all around the house are low, 7.5' Also I think there are two ducts running, the left side closest to light goes to upstairs bathroom. The one on right runs to a living room. I should also probably check if theres any space in between those 2 ducts...unless theres 2x4s,
