How should I finish my porch walls?

yobittlesAugust 23, 2009

I have a nice closed in front porch that has stucco all over on the inside walls. I want to remove it because it is ugly and dirty and too sharp for my kids to play in there. My house is a 96-year old craftsman style so I am not sure what to replace it with so it doesn't look weird with the house. The outside of the house has white stucco on the main floor and colonial blue wood shingles on the second story. The floor in the porch looks like hardwood painted with a durable gray floor paint, and the ceiling also strangely looks like hardwood flooring stained deep brown. I am really not good at design/decorating so I am not sure what to do. And, do I just scrape the stucco off with a spackling tool? I don't even know what might be under the stucco, if it is paintable or will I have to apply some kind of surface.

Your looking at a bit of work to remove the stucco with no guarantee of what you will find underneath it. Have you considered putting a wall over the stucco? May be quicker, cleaner and a lot less work.
