What should soapstone be finished to?

texaspennyMarch 23, 2013

We are having Anasazi soapstone installed in a few weeks. It's not very common here, but the fabricator we're using has done a few soapstone jobs. Is there a certain finish the soapstone should be sanded to? I think they're planning to just cut as needed, but keep the top the way it comes from Dorado. Is that right or should there be sanding of the top too?

Call Dorado.

I wouldn't rely solely on the fabricator's opinion.

After reading several threads about SS surfaces not done right, I called the company who imports the one I am getting and they told me to use 80-100 grit for the surface to be "user-friendly".

Several folks here recommended "Florida Joshua" as a great source of info but IDK if he would consult on a stone that is not "his".

Thanks! I'll try calling Dorado tomorrow. The soapstone fabrication is the one thing I'm really worried about. We're also using it as a 2cm backplash in some areas.

It can be finished to almost anything you like. A lot depends on the softness/hardness of your particular stone. I took my Mariana to a 320/400 wet for a more velvet look
