stain color matching ipe vs pt wood

zver11August 5, 2011

Building an IPE deck. Pressure treated 2x12 (15' long) stair stringers. Will stain IPE (haven't decided on stain). Would like to stain stair stringers to close to the same color as IPE. Given that IPE is dark and PT wood is very light, how do I get the colors of the end product to match? Is there enough pigment in the stain? Also, would a good hardwood stain work well on PT wood?

Stair is long floating steps, so pressure treated wood will show. Also believe it needs to be finished for stability.
