Best Way to fill in holes in Porch Posts

chipster_2007July 24, 2013

I am having new railings put on my porch and the removal of the old railings and nails are leaving good sized holes in the vertical posts/beams.
What is the best material/caulk to use that will provide long term sealing from the elements? Thanks

Bondo if your painting.

What are the reasons behind using Bondo vs caulking or other alternatives? I love the science behind solutions.

Cheaper than wood filler and generally permanent. Caulking is not permanent.

Millworkman,
Are you talking about Bondo auto body filler or Bondo wood filler?

Either or, autobody filler was used for years before the Bondo company started making wood filler and from what I recall it was available in larger quantities and cheaper than wood filler.

Don't know if it has the same properties as the bondo but I use Minwax Wood filler. You can trim it down as it hardens so that there is minimal sanding needed after it cures. I've filled, primed and painted holes in 6x12's and afterward no one could spot the repairs.

Here is a link that might be useful: wood filler

Basically same thing except larger quantities and cheaper price.

I have repaired porch posts with Bondo with great success.

A abatron has a good epoxy for restorations.
