Lattice Around Deck Question

I live in Ohio where we have a lot of freezing and thawing. I need to have lattice installed around my deck. A contractor told me that he would install the vinyl lattice by attaching the top of the lattice to a wood beam and digging a trench and burying the bottom of the lattice approximately 6 inches underground. Is this a proper installation technique?

I absolutely agree with John, it shouldn't be buried - even vinyl. Sometime you may need to get below your deck and the lattice will need to be removed.

Here is a not too good photo of how I built ours. The "panels" are attached to the support posts and screws can be quickly withdrawn to remove a panel for access. Have your lattice installed in a frame so you can do something similar.
