Mulch near deck footings?

jdrudingJune 19, 2010

I had planned on putting mulch around the outside of my deck. My question is: is there any concern with mulch being very close to or touching the wooden footings?

Footings are typically concrete. I assume you mean wooden posts? Yes, it's a problem if the the wood is "buried" in dirt, as it will create moisture which rots wood and creates a nice home for termites.

How are the posts set? Directly into the ground? Directly into the concrete? On top of the concrete but in direct contact? On post anchors that separate them from the concrete?

Yes, I meant wooden posts and they are buried in the ground. I will not let the mulch come in contact with the wood, I'll surround them with stones or something. Thanks!
