Not a fan of newly stained deck

davemnMay 28, 2010

Hi all,

Just got finished staining my deck today and I've got to say that myself or my wife aren't fans of the color. I went with Sikkons SRD Semi-Transparent stain in Terra Cotta color. It has alot more orange in the color than originally percieved from the sample. Although the shade is fine, we were hoping for more brown. When I was first applying it, I thought it looked a little more red/orange but figured that once dried and fully absorbed it would look like the color we were after. Being a new homeowner and new to decks, I did my research and properly prepped (Powerwashed/Cabot's wood cleaner/Powerwashed/Sanded the whole deck with 80grit/orbital sander)the deck. The stain looks great, but again, the color is not what we wanted.

Anyway, my question is, is there anyway to add more brown to the color? Is it possible to add another coat of stain of a darker color to achieve the results we want? Will the color change a bit once fully absorbed?

TIA for any advice

There is not a lot of expertise about stains on this site with the exception of John Hyatt who uses TWP. There is a site of pressure washing professionals who work on cleaning and staining decks: They have a DIY forum. You might get some answers to your questions there.

Good luck,
