New Pool Build-Orangevale, CA

AmyandJamesApril 17, 2014

My husband and I have been working on a pool design for almost 2 years now and we are finally pulling the trigger and starting our dream backyard. My home is on 1.50 acres and nothing has been done to the backyard other than some concrete work around the house when we first moved in. We are going with a large pool so that when it's finished it does not look like a pond in my backyard.

Any advise or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Pool Specs:
45' x 30' 6" x 23' 6" free form pool
915 sq ft pool
10' x 15' Cabo Shelf with 2 umbrella sleeves
3' to 8' deep
Salt water pool
Pebble Sheen in Aqua Blue
3x3 water line tile-may upgrade this to 6x6 tile for $600 more.
30' of 42" Raised Bond Beam with Stone Face and Stone Cap (right & left side of pool on back wall)
16' of 30" Raised Bond Beam with Stone Face and Stone Cap (middle of pool on back wall)
2-36" Clear Sheer Descent Spillways
3-24" Clear Sheer Descent Spillways
5 Tons of Boulders
Notched Beam for Boulders
Jump Rock Boulder with Step Rocks at deep end
3-LED Color Changing Lights

Equipment:
Pentair 520 Filter
Intelliflo VS Pump
Sand Shark Pool Cleaner
Seperate 1HP pump for 36" Spillways
Use Intellifo Pump for 24" Spillways
Solar Stubs at equipment pad
2-Skimmers with concrete caps
Autofill with overflow-owner to tie into drain

Concrete:
1450 sq ft of stamped no color concrete decking with 6x6 grid and band on outside edge
60' of 6" step riser in walkway to tie existing concrete with pool decking
4' x 6' Equipment Pad

Given that we are having an historic drought here in Northern CA, can you even get a permit for a pool right now?

Sushipup: We signed March 30th and the permit was pulled and issued shortly after that. Within our county permits are issued right on the spot.

Auto fill and an over flow drain is a must. (It is already on your list) The auto fill that looks like the one used in your toilet tank is a good one and easy and cheap to replace when needed. Do not use a zone on your sprinkler system for auto fill purposes. With all those nooks and crannies, the return jets need to be positioned so that there are NO dead areas. If there are any dead areas in your pool, dirt, leaves, etc. will collect there. Water MUST be flowing through all the nooks and crannies to keep the pool clean.

Such an exciting weekend. Our PB was out yesterday mapping out where the pool was going and then we broke ground! The PB are back at it again today and the pool is finally taking shape.

Decisions, decisions, decisions! The back wall is going to be stacked stone. Now I need to pick the water line tile. I'm leaning towards the top left picture, NPT Relic Earth. It seems to match well with the stacked stone. But I'm also thinking the top right tile, NPT Verona Tavora Tan would work well with the stacked stone and the Aqua Blue Pebble sheen. Any advise on these tile options????

I personally don't like going too neutral. Here is the tile I chose and I love it. But, it's going against flagstone.

Thanks Homer100 for your pictures. Your pool and backyard turned out beautiful. I still have not made a decision on the waterline tile. Going to give it some thought over the weekend.

Today is going to be a big day in the pool build, it's Gunite Day!!! This is where I think I will really see the pool truly take shape. I will post pictures throughout the day of this process so stay tuned!

One other thing, my husband and I are tossing around the idea of adding the Pentair Ultratemp High Performance Heat Pump. Has anyone installed this? If so, do you look back and think it was a good option for the extra cost and to extend your swim season? Just want to get the most use out of out pool throughout the year as possible. We can't add a gas heater due to where I placed the pool equipment pad from the house, over 250+ feet away will cost me a fortune in running gas pipe. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Here is a picture of the stacked stone wet. We like the colors when wet because it is a richer look vs. looking washed out. We are thinking about sealing the stacked stone to keep it looking wet. Here is our dilemma, we like the waterline tile that we chose around the rest of the pool, but don't like the contrast under the stacked stone. Do you think it will look ok once the blue granite pebble sheen is in and the pool is filled? We were thinking about ripping out the lighter tile only under the stacked stone which is between the boulders (47 ft.) and replacing it with a darker tile. Or maybe carrying the stacked stone down into the water. Thanks for any advice.

Still have to install the heat pump (wrong one was ordered), replace one LED light (wrong one was installed), finish buttoning up the plumbing, and balance the chemicals. Almost there! Can't wait to see the sheer descents pouring out of the walls and the colored LED lights turned on. Should be swimming by next weekend. We must have good water here, because the pool did not turn green to start like many others I've read about online.
