Concrete Footing for Deck

Digger4everApril 3, 2013

Poured a concrete footing (sonotube) for my deck and installed a 4X4 metal post holder. After 1 day decided to use 6X6 instead. Tried removing the 4X4 post holder and the top of the pier is cracking. Any suggestions?

Footings provide the solid foundation that will support your deck. It also have to be installed lower than the frost line to prevent the deck from moving when the soil freezes in the winter.

Dig and pour your deck footings so they extend below the frost line. Ask your building department about the frost depth requirement in your area and the required size and shape of the footings.
