Screened deck flooring - how to keep bugs out?

jvanMarch 4, 2007

Hello, I will be having a deck built on the ground level on the back of my house, beneath my second story deck. I decided to have the contractor screen it in to keep out the mosquitos. Howevever, it just crossed my mind that can't the bugs simply fly up between the floorboards? What are some solutions to this? Instruct the contractor to place the boards very close together? Even then I'm a little concerned that may not be the best solution. Most decks I've seen, and my current 2nd story deck, has plenty of space between the floor boards in which to allow insects to fly between - which would defeat the screened in porche's purpose. Any recommendations?

Thanks!!

A Ground leval project needs space between the decking and cross vintalation going thru the frame. It is possible to install screen under the decking but a person has to be real carefull not to snag the screen while the decking is being put down, this is almost impossible.

Go with a slab. John

Our old screened porch was built on a slab. Dh put decking boards on top to make it more asthetically pleasing. There was a little room between the slab and boards for insects to enter, but it was never a problem. I don't have a shot of the foundation and decking, but the linked album gives you a general idea.
