Researching New Hot Water Heaters

meisocalNovember 7, 2012

My house was built in 1997 and we are probably overdue on replacing the hot water heater. The current heater is in the Garage and I want to get the house down the road of eventually needing to be in Zero Net Energy. The plan is to replace with a HE Tankless and a recirculating pump. I found that Navien makes the tankless ones with the recirc pumps built in(NR240A or NPE240A). This would be a great option but I can't seem to find comprehensive reviews out there. Does anyone know what the difference between these two models are? Also, if you have been having problems with your unit, I would like to receive constructive feedback as to what was the cause and how difficult it was to correct.

The plan is to have my plumber (ex-commercial plumber) who is also my neigbor install the unit.

Thank you for any feedback.

I have been in my house since 1993 and still use the original water heater. Don't know how long it was around before we purchased the house, but, it just keeps humming right along.

Maybe you don't need to fix what isn't broken.

I don't have any experience with these units, maybe you plumber/neighbor has? Maybe you can get references from the manufacturer themselves??

DHW is a major energy hog in homes. The DOE has a lot of information to help you pick a water heater that is appropriate for your climate.
