Repair or replace?

lgteacherJanuary 29, 2013

I bought a home with an already installed pergola attached to the house. A few years ago I removed the crosspieces because they were in bad condition. The main structure seems to be OK, but some of the supports are damaged at the base. There is a little termite damage and the metal straps which secure the posts to the cement pieces are rusted through.

Can the supports be repaired? I've thought about complete replacement with vinyl, but I like to have hanging pots and such, and I have never seen that with a vinyl pergola.

I would definitely replace those posts and the anchors. Buy hot-dip galvanized post supports (won't rust) that keep the wood off the concrete. Something like this:

Make sure the posts are pressure treated (PT) wood (insect and rot resistant), and I'd recommend 6x6 (current code) instead of 4x4.

Can you post some photos of the whole pergola? Might have some other suggestions.
