tapping noise from baseboard heat

cahill98November 6, 2006

Hi all,

We recently had an addition put on and the new baseboard heat is making a tapping noise whenever it is on. It is not terribly loud, sounds like someone tapping there finger on the wall, but annoying when trying to sleep. Any idea what would be causing this?

It's very common. I believe that it is caused by parts of the heater expanding from the heat or contracting when the heat goes off, and rubbing slightly. I don't think there is anything you can do to eliminate it.

There are usually some plastic spacers that seperate the tube with the fins on it from the metal housing, if these are missing or not placed properly you will get a ticking noise. Also make sure the pipe is not rigidly held in the bracketts, there needs to be some give for the pipe to expand and contract. Hope this helps.
