Main sink in island tips?

marykhMarch 23, 2013

Because of view considerations, the main sink in the home we're currently designing will be in a large L-shaped island. Long leg of the L faces the living room area, short leg faces a windowed dining alcove. (length of each leg is still being determined.). Living room length will be much wider and accomodate seating.

We love to cook ...and tend to clean as we go. But having never had the main sink in the island, what tips can you all give me for making it work most effectively and discreetly?

This is the first home I've ever had a sink in the island in too, and am loving it! I too clean as I go, so like having the prep zone on one side of the sink and cleanup zone on the other.

Tips that work for me:

1. Get a soap dispenser and garbage disposal air switch in the countertop.
2. Tilt out trays at the sink so that you don't have to store scrubbies or sponges on the island. I like two separate tilts outs instead of one big one as they are easier to open with one hand that way.
3. Two dishwashers if you can swing it spacewise. Single best thing I did; am thankful for it every day. There are never dirty dishes left in out on the counter. And if hand washing pots and pans I can put them in one of the DWs to air dry instead of leaving them draining on the counter.
4. Ensure you have enough depth in your island so that seating behind the sink isn't impacted.

Good luck and enjoy your new home.
