Old gas valve question

grandmumMay 23, 2011

I have an unused fireplace that has a log lighter installed in it. It has its own shutoff valve you turn with a key and there is an old style safety valve in the crawl space (brass with nut and grease) Since the fireplace is unused Im thinking its best that I turn off the gas from the valve in the crawlspace.

However, I am hesitant to do so since the valve is old and my experience with old valves is that once you toggle them leaks happen. I am not familar with particular old valve but are they proned to leak when shutoff? They are quarter turn... can they be turned both ways (I dont want to force it with a wrench if it doesnt turn easy).

You could shut the gas off at the main, open a valve to make sure there's no residual pressure, then remove the old valve and replace it with a new valve with a brass plug fitting placed on the outlet side of the new valve.

Hope that helps,

Shut the gas off at the main as mentioned above then remove the valve and cap the line.
