Pipe Noise or Leak

firsttimebldrApril 13, 2011

There is a noise under my kitchen sink when I pour boiling water down the drain that resembles a drip. I have been under the sink a dozen times looking for a leak and there is none. The noise is making me crazy. This house was newly constructed 6 years ago by a very reputable builder. Can anyone give me some ideas of what the noise is and how to solve it? I will be extremely grateful for any help. Betsy.

Don't pour boiling water down ordinary drains.

Likely caused by expansion of material or differential thereof.

If you have a garbage disposal turn it on, run cold water, pour the boiling water into the sink.

Where should I dump the pasta, potatoe, etc. water? I will try the garbage disposal/cold water idea. Thanks. Betsy.

Plastic expands a lot more than metal when it is heated.

Cooling the water helps to reduce the amount of expansion.
