Well pressure tank

kellerk2April 4, 2013

I need to adjust the precharge in my well pressure tank. It is located in my crawlspace, lower than any faucet in the house, and does not have a drain plumbed into the line. In order to actually drain the tank, I would have to undo the feeder line (PITA). Do I need to drain the entire tank before setting my precharge to the 2 or 3 lbs under my cut in? Or, can I just shut the well off, turn on a faucet to drain the pressure, and then add air to the right pressure?

You need to drain the tank completely. Standing water above the tank will cause your tank pressure to be incorrect. I know it's a pain but perhaps, as long as you have to disconnect the line anyway, you could install a drain valve.

All my tanks have the bladder in the top. I have 4 such tanks and the air is at the top. There is no way that the weight of water could be above an intact tank bladder.
