gas hot water heater running with the water turned off

caloryMarch 26, 2014

I was away from home for three months. While away the water at the house was turned off due to a slab leak detected. I called the gas company to turn off the gas, but for some reason they did not. My question--has the water in the heater been depleted, or just reheated numerous times, or?????
Is my water heater ruined?

Any help with this is much appreciated,

They are thermostatically controlled.
The tank should still have water but at a less than full level.

Next time turn the WH control to pilot.
