Sur La Table Knife Skills Class?

cj47_gwDecember 24, 2012

There's a SLT in our area that offers cooking classes. I'm intriged by some of them, but I learn readily from recipes that I read on the internet and see on TV, so I'm not sure that it would be worth the time or money to go there and take one. However, I'm actually considering the class on knife skills. I have watched a few internet videos and read some information online, and think that my knife skills are probably...ok. I have three good knives that I keep very sharp. I know how to cut up an onion, dice, and can work my way through a julienne, but am wondering if it might be worth the money to go there and watch an 'expert' teach the skills and learn to do some of the other cuts. Has anyone here ever done it, and did you think it was worth it? I guess I just wonder if I could be better/more efficient with my knife skills. And I wonder if it really matters that much for a home cook. (not that I will ever plate the way dcarch does!)

I have taken basic and advanced Knife Skills classes at our community college. My knife skills were OK prior to the classes but I learned some time-saving tips and more efficient preparation techniques for various ingredients. Since I am basically a "from scratch" cook, anything that speeds up prep work is a plus.

Most interesting was a segment on what to look for when shopping for knives.

The classes were only $20 or $25 so I definitely got my money's worth.
