Swollen sausage?

calilooNovember 22, 2009

I bought a 1 lb package of Jimmy Dean Sausage 2 days ago and it has been in my fridge since then. I just went to move it and the package is completely swollen and about to burst. What is going on? Should I return it? Can it be used? I've never encountered this anomoly before.......

Alexa

PS - Jessy - go for it!!! I opened the door just for you! LOLOLOL!

I don't have an answer but I see this happen a lot on ground meats that are packaged at the plant rather than in the store. Turkey, lamb, etc. Maybe yours just blew up at home rather than in the store? Dunno. It wigs me out a bit so I try to avoid them, but I'm sure it's just fine.

ROFL! Nope, it is set on the cool side of normal. I actually just tossed a jar of pickles that got too close to the cooling duct and had ice crystals in it.

Maybe I should post a picture? LOLOLOL!

What's worse, Alexa's swollen sausage problem or my little worm problem?

So the one in front is the one that has been in the fridge. The one in back has been in the freezer for 2 days. Remember from your Physics class that the one in back should expand in volume when frozen because of the moisture content. The one in front is scaring me! LOL!

I think I would put it out on the back deck and see how long it would take to explode!

I have no doubt you have looked at the date. I would definitely put it to the smell test. I've seen that and it always makes me test it before eating.

It sure it wouldn't be floppy or swollen if you refrigerated it David.

Put it in a bowl of ice water and see if it shrinks.

Geez guys I'm here all morning, gone all afternoon and evening and look at what kind of trouble you get into. Tsk tsk.

Alexa, glad to see you have 'handled' your problem. Me, I would have just kept examining that package, until it exploded in my hands....

I think it has gas, like the puppy had gas (we were so worried we made an appt with the vet, who couldn't help laughing when we told him that's what we came in for...he said some dogs are gassy--and he didn't charge us for the office visit).

I'm guessing gas.

I've had the same problem, so now I limit my internet surfing to the cooking forum and news sites.

Take it back. It shouldn't be doing that! I've had it happen before and had to throw it out.

I've had that happen...after the use by date.

Best to give it a little squeeze or stroke it a bit to see if anything comes out.

Not me, I'm impatient. I'm with Nancy, I'd squeeze it and see if anything happened! (grin)

Actually, Alexa, I think I'd take it back, that's just not right. And, even if your storage is fine, that doesn't mean it was properly refrigerated in shipping.

Run to the store, donÂt walk and return it before it explodes. OMG botulism all over the kitchen. I had a can of dog food sitting on a counter once. Noticed the lid was bulging so I decided to take it back next time I went to town. Problem was a few days later I was in the kitchen cooking dinner and yepÂ.. Fire in the hole. Alpo everywhere. Just about decapitated me when the can flew by in pieces. If that thing explodes in your kitchen that will be the day when "PIGS FLY" at your place. LOL
