Professional printing of enlargements?

alisandeJune 30, 2007

I've been wringing my hands over buying a higher-end printer for a couple of years now. I want to print some of my dad's old b&w negatives as well as my own (mostly color) images. I finally decided on the one that I want (HP 9180), but it's $600 and I'm reluctant to lay out that much money.

Do any of you use professional printing services for archival quality enlargements (b&w and color)? I'd appreciate your sharing a couple of names of these services so I can check out the prices and see if this would be a good option for me.

Thanks!

the maintenance for the high-end printer can be $$$. IF you are making some money from them, then that is fine . Otherwise, I say use a pro-printer. I like to use mpix.com, they do great work.

Thanks, Joe! I trust your judgment. When printing color, which paper do you specify, the traditional or metallic?

I'll start by ordering a couple of b&w prints of my father's photographs. He used medium- and large-format cameras. It will take me a while to get up and running with this, but it should be interesting.

Both are equally nice, but two totally different looks. I emailed them and asked for samples and I had some in 5 days. I would recommend you do the same. You will see what I mean, though.
