What's a serving?

lindacNovember 19, 2011

I made a huge pot of spaghetti sauce and a bunch meatballs. Served a meal to friends and now guess there are about 30 meatballs left and 4 1/2 to 5 quarts of sauce. I want to freeze it in say enough for 4 in a container.

so what is enough spaghetti sauce for 4?

I froze about a short cup for 2 servings, my sauce is thick with a lot of meat in it.

We must have big appetites. We usually get 4 servings of sauce with a quart.

The USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory seems to indicate that 1 serving of marinara sauce is 1/2 cup. I think that is a little stingy. However, I like a generous sauce to pasta ratio.

Here is a link that might be useful: USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory

I get 4 servings out of a quart of sauce, too.

Ok....I'll freeze it in quart containers...That was my instinct.....but thought maybe I was over generous.
How big are those jars of Barilla or Paul Newman's or (Lord forbid!) Prego sauces?
Thanks all!

They typically range around 24-26 oz, not enough for four adult servings in my opinion. I think you're good with a quart for four. But you're going to have to make more meatballs!

the meat balls will go in 2 of the containers......the rest may be used for chicken cacciatore or eggplant parm...

What a great topic. I think most people would be surprise d by what constitutes a serving. I went out to dinner with my mom and sister and we took home our leftovers. My mother's leftovers alone doubled as lunch for three (almost) the next day.

In upstate NY, portions tend to be huge. When I was in Napa, I loved the reasonable sized portions. Then again, people seemed thinner there. There must be a correlation.
