dry paint removal on shellacked wood

old_house_j_i_mDecember 6, 2013

getting ready to paint in the house I just bought. thankfully none of the woodwork was painted, but there are old spatters and drips that I would like to clean off of it. Probably some of it's oil and some is latex.

The woodwork is shellacked (original, 107 years old) and I don't want to mess up that old finish.

Has anyone successfully removed paint from a shellacked finish without harming the shellack ?

I guess the first question I want to ask is how good is the shellac, really? Be suspicious...Look around the entire room, not just at the paint splatters and drips...get down close. Is it starting to crackle at all?
