2-tone paint on basement wall with ledge?

snertOctober 22, 2009

We are in the midst of a basement remodel, and we have a ledge along one of the exterior walls approx. 4'6" feet of the ground. We are acid staining the concrete a sort of reddish color, but need to pick paint colors in the next few days. My wife thinks we should have a different color above the ledge than below, but I wonder if it might make the ceilings look low (they are just under 8' tall). We are installing white baseboard trim after the floor is stained. We might also have a MDF trim piece on the ledge, since I think it will inevitably be used to put drinks on, etc.

What do people think of the two-tone look? If we do it, should we go with darker hue on bottom or top? We are thinking taupe/light brown for the wall.

This is a better question for the Home-Decor forum here.

In our LL, we have the same set-up! I wanted an Oak ledge, with a small 1/4-round at the upper-wall, and door-stop molding trimming-off the edge where the lower-wall meets the Oak. I think it looks "warmer".
If you have 3 or 4 coats of Poly on your wood, there's little worry from occasional glasses. Keep it wiped off though!!!
