Technique help please: ballusters

wi-sailorgirlOctober 31, 2010

I'm repainting our staircase. I should probably be happy that the ballusters are square, rather than round, as I suspect that's easier to paint but I have to say, so far I'm making a big mess of it. I've primed the whole thing (BIN on the rails and posts as they have knots that bleed through and Fresh Start on the ballusters which have no knots) and also put one finish coat on the part of the railing not currently attached to the staircase.

The problem I'm having, even with the finish paint (Aura) is that I'm ending up with thick edges where the paint from one side sort of ootches over onto the next side.

Any tips for me? As usual, thanks so much in advance!

Paint opposite sides, and wipe the excess off the sides you did not paint.

Let it dry, then do the same thing to the other two sides.

Try using a small roller....I know some spindles are too tight for the roller to fit in between. If you can't use a roller, then I would paint 3 sides of about 4 spindles, then run around to the other side and paint side #4 of those 4 spindles and then repeat until it is done. This way, your drips can't dry because you are finish painting that side.

Thank you both for the tips. I'll give them a try. I have plenty of balusters to be able to try both methods!
