Prepping trim for paint

annac54September 21, 2012

I have trim that needs to be painted in a condo we bought. I have no idea what type of paint is on there now (oil or ?), but it's semi gloss. Any idea how to tell? We thought we would use one of the paints with primer in it, but I'm not sure that would be enough for good adhesion. The place was built around 1987 , so it could be either. Any advice would be appreciated.

Do a google search of "test for oil or latex paint." There is some common household product that takes off latex but not oil.

I would use a paint made for use on trim. I use Cabinet Coat, but there are several products on the market. It's important to understand that it takes weeks for paint to fully cure, so once you paint, be careful with it for a while.

Thanks! I looked it up and you can use either alcohol or acetone. They will dissolve latex but not oil. The condo won't be occupied for a while after it's painted, (still have to install the new kitchen, bathroom, and flooring) so it should have time to cure before getting much use. Thanks again!
