Tinted Primer vs. untinted

chefwongSeptember 19, 2010

It's been awhile since I've painted...

The last coat was Muralo Ceramic.

I plan to repaint the kitchen and living/dining rooms.

All different colors.

Should I just go ahead and prime all the walls with untinted primer which is a +++ cause I can just buy a 5 gallon bucket.

Or it's ALL in the prep and it's best to use a tinted primer that is tinted to whatever paint I am using.

It depends on the colors you have chosen. If you have picked a color that will not cover the white primer in two coats, then you may have to apply an extra coat.

if the walls have been painted before, you don't need a primer unless you are covering up strongly different shades.

Dark colors over light - a grey primer helps
Light colors over dark - a white primer helps

Other than that, unless you have extensive wall patches to cover, just paint.
