Adirondack chair paint chalking off

sudiepavJuly 4, 2012

I have a cute Adirondack rocker which took me 3years to persuade my husband to put together. It's painted white. The white is chalking off, so whenever I sit in it, paint rubs off on me. What to do? Can I repaint or somehow treat it so the paint won't rub off?

I don't know. It came pre-painted.

The remedy sorta depends on how much effort you wanna put in them!

IDEALLY though:
* Scrub-'em down good to remove dirt and the chalking paint.
* When very dry...sand the top-sides, armrests, and legs with ~100-grit paper.
* Remove all dust by sweeping/shop-vac-ing, tack-cloth, and finally...a wipe-down with paint-thinner dampened rags.
* NOW you've got a sound surface with a slight texture from sanding. The chairs will now hold paint well!
* Apply a GOOD Exterior primer. SLIGHT preference to a "long-dry" Oil primer.
* Lastly....TWO coats of a top-notch Exterior Latex paint. Preferably a Satin or higher sheen.
* Make sure to prime/paint the bottom of the legs too!!

>>> Let your new paint Dry/"Harden-off" a week or so before use.
