Thinking of painting my black cabinet to white

debbie1000July 28, 2011

I have lightish oak kitchen cabinets from 1988. About ten years ago I had a painter paint my island black as an accent.

I'm thinking of going "all white" but I want to try just the island first. The rest of the cabinets are still the 1988 oak.

Can I change this without getting streaks of black? The island is only 2 x 4 so it's not giant. The paint is a matte black and I would like to do a semi-gloss white.

I was thinking using zinser and then 1-2 coats of white paint. Would that do it? I also heard something that I should prime with a gray color rather than white.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You shoud be fine, depending on what you are going to use as a finish paint.
