painting a scrap of deck wood

pitpatJune 3, 2011

So my husband replaced a small section of rotting porch wood with a piece of treated deck wood and now, a year later, it needs to be painted red to match. I was hoping to use the BM exterior paint that our painters used on our trim 2 years ago. Any tips? What do I need to do to it first? thanks!

Maybe dumb question, but....

By "deck board", do ya mean it literally goes on the walking surface, or vertical...like the trim you mentioned?

If it's horizontal use...no, you can't use trim paint.
UNLESS....it's an area with no foot traffic?!

No, not a dumb question, I wasn't clear. It will be vertical. It's part of a 2x4 "panel" between the door and a floor-to-ceiling screen.

Aaaaaalllll righty then!

Dumber question....Since it's installed, can it be easily removed??

IF you can....
Prime it on ALL 6 sides with Oil primer.
Then a coat of the paint all the way around too.
2nd paintcoat can just go on the visible side.

NOW you've got a board that will outlast the house....

If not easily removeable, prime & paint what you can.

Easily removed? That depends on my husband. He won't like it, but I'll see what he says.

Thanks!

All-in-all it's not a big deal!

But if it's in an area that may be prone to water hangin' 'round frequently, it may benefit some IF it's easy to get out again.

I should've added...
* Make sure surrounding areas/door-edges are caulked well too!
* Do a thorough inspection.
* Water can get in thru the damndest spaces!
