Painting inside of wooden garage door

TunerGeekJune 2, 2014

I have a north-facing wooden garage door. The inside is currently unpainted, and the outside panels are alligatoring/chipping/peeling. I assume that is because of moisture trying to escape to the outside thru the thinner panels. (The chipping etc paint is not an issue on the rails and stiles.) is it a good idea to paint the interior side? Or could that lead to additional or different problems? I assume I should wait for a spell of lower humidity (I'm in the upper Midwest and summers are nasty!) and apply boiled linseed oil and oil-based primer before a color (white) coat. Thoughts appreciated!

What brand is the door? I'm sure there is a maintenance sheet available online.

It will tell you to paint/finish all six sides.

For most things, I would probably have thought to google the make/model, but it never occurred to me for my garage door, probably 'cuz I've never had a NEW wooden garage door. I will do that now, but if I don't find anything I will take your suggestion and paint all six sides. Thank you!

Remember that, for balancing purposes, that a color coat on top of a primer on top of an oil coat is heavy. Also beware of doing the entire door at once as pushing two edges with wet paint together can be considered a glue job.
