Tile to counter questions

boops2012February 28, 2013

I'm confused. There have been several times I hear that the back splash is grouted down to the counter but other times that only caulk goes there as grout is not waterproof. So which is it?
I've read conflicting info not only here but on HGTV shows as well.

Caulk should go at the bottom seam where the backsplash meets countertop. Not only a waterproofing issue 9since grout can be sealed and waterproofed) it is because grout is not flexible so any movement in the countertop/cabinets due to settling can be transmitted to tile and crack them.

Also it makes change of countertop in the future easier.
