Removing paint from exterior bricks?

osirus226June 8, 2011

We have a 1920's house that we're rehabbing. Currently, we are trying to remove the paint off the bricks on the outside.

Theres a white paint on the bricks and on top of that an old brown paint. All of it is flaking and chipping. We put soygel on there but getting it off is a chore since the other houses are so close and we wanted to just pressure wash it off. And of course its not all coming off.

Do you think we should just repaint the dern things, or do you think we should try to keep getting the paint off?

If you think we should paint them, what color do you think would look nice?

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Soygel might not be your best choice for brick. Try Peel Away 6 (or maybe it's 7?) - check over at oldhouseweb.com 's forums, there are many folks over there who have experience getting paint off of brick.

I had a similar problem at my house. I gave up trying to do it myself and contacted a MD home improvement company. They used a technique called soda blasting to strip paint off of the bricks. It worked really great and they said it was an environmentally friendly method- which is great because I'm all about the going green! Hope that helps!
