What stain would match best? HELP!

issalambertApril 23, 2012

Hello!

I am new to this forum and am not sure if this is the place to ask this. I am building a home and I have a medium brown stain on my Maple cabinets in an open floor plan. My question is what color stain should I have on my oak 3 panel doors and trim? The trim and doors are up and they are in a natural state right now and I am in love with the lightness! I should also mention that I have handscraped natural light hickory flooring throughout...Can I get away with natural doors and trim too? Will that look silly in the bathroom next to the medium brown Maple cabinets? I do like the color of the medium stain too....what would look best? Please..any help!!! I am desperate!

Thanks in advance!!!

I think you can go anywhere between the color of the floors and the color of the cabinets. Oak darkens up significanly on its own without any stain, so even a natural finish (no stain) will appear darker than they look now. A true natural colored oak can only be accomplished with water based finishes, so be sure to ask for samples before committing to anything.

Try Minwax Early American. I suggest making the oak intentionally different so it doesn't look like you tried to match and missed.
