How to paint so it looks like wood stain

amav31March 9, 2008

Up until yesterday I was all ready and prepared to stain my unfinshed wood furniture(Aspen, pine, parawood.)

But after watching a show on Hgtv, I wondered if I can use a wood tone paint instead. This way I will not have any problem with stain un-eveness on the softwoods.

My question is,

1.Will painting with wood color really show the natural grains of the wood. Will the final finish look like a stained wood finish.

2.Can someone who tried this technique recommend some colors. I initially picked honey maple color from minwax.

3. I assume, if I go with paints, then I dont have to use the wood conditioner, I will use the 123 primer and then paint.?

Thanks for any suggestions or tips.

You may have better success using masking stain or heavy wiping stains.
