caramel covered Cheetos?

Fori

A while back there was a flurry of caramel covered Cheetos or something. They looked like fried palm beetle grubs and were supposed to taste oddly good.

Does anyone know what I mean? My searching isn't being productive.

I think I'm ready to take the plunge. Thank you!

Here ya go!!
Caramel Cheetosî AKA Goose Poop Lynn Arterburn

2 cups light brown sugar
1 cup margarine - yes, for this one you must use margarine
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 - 21 oz. pkg. Cheetosî - crunchy kind

Mix sugar, margarine and corn syrup in pan. Bring to a boil. Boil 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and add soda. Stir until light in color and foamy. Spray a roasting pan (deep 10 x 14) with Pam. Put Cheetosî in pan. Pour the mixture over Cheetosî and stir, coating each piece. Place in oven at 250 degrees. Bake for 1 hour stirring every 15 minutes. Immediately, pour onto wax paper, or cookie sheets, sprayed with Pam. (This is the hard part.) VERY QUICKLY spread out as thin as possible. If not quick and spread out as thin as possible, you will get a big hard glob. After about 5 minutes, pull/break these apart even more and loosen them from the wax paper. If you don't, you'll have wax paper stuck to them when you go to eat them.

You will regret it if you don't double the batch as guests are going to demand MORE! You can bake batches together and add an extra 20 minutes to bake time. I do them separately because of having to work so quickly to keep them apart at the end. The one batch can almost get too hard while working with the other batch.

I made this last year at Christmas. I spread the mixture on heavy duty aluminum foil that I had taped to the counter top. I lightly misted it with PAM to prevent sticking. Worked like a charm.

fori, another good one to try is when you use the white cheddar puff cheetos and coat with melted white chocolate.

I;m making my first batch of the fall season tomorrow. I have 6 middle schoolers coming for football (watching and flag in the back yard) and need something to intrigue them - this is perfect! IT is strangely addictive!

Why can't you use butter? It seems like the same way I make caramel corn and I always use butter.

SHHHH!!! I use butter!
I think the reason it says must use margarine is to keep it solidly in the junk food category!

Ok, I've got to try this. It sounds like a sure win with the grandkids.

Butter. The other health food! Yeehaw!! I feel better about it knowing I can use butter.

Thanks everyone!

(Of course now I'm wondering if I can use something with more identifiable ingredients like "Pirate's Booty" or Trader Joe's knockoff of it. But I'll go with the orangey stuff for Halloween. It's not like I'll be eating the whole batch right? right...?)

I disagree. Chances are that either way there won't be much left by the time the guests come, so you might be better off having eaten just a single batch. This is the one junk food that even my very self-controlled mother can't stop eating.

I like cheetos, I like caramel but I do not like them together.
Made a double batch last year, and tossed the whole thing! DD asked me what I was thinking, she didn't like them either.
And I love me some junk food.

Di - If you don't like them then obviously you made them wrong, and as such you probably shouldn't be commenting about them.

Totally kidding, of course! But I am surprised. The Cheetos lose their cheesiness and are basically just a crunchy vehicle for the caramel crust. Each to his own. For example I love nuts alone but not mixed into my food, wife loves pickles alone but not mixed in with her food, so maybe this is just a combination you don't like.

Bumpity bump....does anyone think I can sub agave syrup for the corn syrup? I have lots of the former and none of the latter, intentionally.

No clue, but I don't care for them either. Maybe because I don't really like cheetos?

Yeah, I know, my kids tell me I'm subversive, perhaps communist, EVERYONE likes cheetos. And pizza. And chocolate chip cookies. Except me. I'm odd....

FOAS, I also like nuts, but not in things. I'll eat walnuts, but not in chocolate fudge and I pick the almonds off the top of Almond Joy and eat those first, then the candy bar.

Weird. Subversive. Perhaps communist.....

It needs to cook to a hard crack stage....will agave do that?
If so...why not?
Do you have any cheap pancake syrup? I think that'll work too.

No cheap pancake syrup here - but I guess I will be the group guineau pig and I'll share my experience.

Apologies, I didn't get to this - my time was spent moving furniture with hubby for painting. Costco to the rescue to provide dorm munchies! It is still on my list of 'kid food' - just not to be served in my home, LOL.

I never made any kind of Poop snacks but I made a good one
last week with Marshmallo's, Butter and CoCo Dyna bits.
And even did the same with, Gen. Mills, Cinnamon Crisp, cereal.
