Living Room Paint Color - Help!

ZeldaRMarch 7, 2011

We are trying to find a neutral color for the living room. When we started, we had in mind a "champagne" color, more like a neutral with a little hint of gold/yellow. Trim will be white. We have tried over ten samples. Any color with yellow looks very yellow, any color with green looks very green, and many colors look too dark.

For example, we tried BM Bronzed Beige and BM Summer Harvest, and they both look mustardy. We tried BM Greenmount Silk, and it turned out too green and a little too grey. BM Monroe Bisque, BM Pittsfield Buff, and BM Powell Buff were way too dark. I thought BM Barbados Sand might do the trick, but it is a little dark, so we might try BM French White next. The closest we have come to a right color is BM Simply Irresistable, but it looks a little too yellow during parts of the day and too light when the sun hits it. We are sticking with BM paints because we have been happy with them in the past.

We have very little natural light in the room (only a few hours of morning sun) and are relying mainly on recessed lights.

This is a big decision for us bc the walls carry on to the bedrooms and to the lower level of the house. Lots of wall to cover!

Any paint suggestions appreciated!

Ellen Kennon has a color called Champagne Gold. It's a full spectrum version - kind of - of the popular Sherwin Williams color Tobacco Road.

Ellen's version is actually a snidge lighter than typical formulas for Tobacco Road.

It's a balanced light champagne gold color. Those are tricky because most colors like that have a shot or two of black which is where the green edge can come from and if it's not black then there isn't enough or the right balance of other *colored* colorants to knock back the yellow, etc., etc. That's usually why folks are unable to find the right pitch of a buffed yellow like you're describing.

Giving Ellen a call to talk about her Champagne Gold might be a good option to consider, could end up being a good color solution for you. Check it out
