Can I paint exposed heating duct work?

lilyluvFebruary 13, 2011

Even though our basement is finished, we have a 6 inch round duct work running the length of one of our large rooms and then a larger rectangular duct work runs the opposite way at one end of the room. We want to redecorate the room, so can we paint it? If so, with what kind of paint? Thanks for any help you can give!

Flat wall paints and washable paints work just fine. Just make sure the ducts are clean before painting.

Thanks, Paintguy!
I did end up using a satin white for both the ceiling and the duct work because that is what I had in the house. Since the room is in a basement with no windows the satin really helps with reflecting the lighting in the room which in turn makes the room brighter and seem bigger! Bad news is it took 3-4 coats for the duct work! If I were to do it again, I think I might use the Kilz primer first.
