wondow stains

cayelexFebruary 20, 2011

I stained my pella window trim with Minwax sedona red color 2 days ago and now think the color is too red. Can I stain another color on top of that to make it more neutral tone? What would be a good color? Do I need to remove the red stain first or can I just stain it over? Please help. Thanks.

You can't completely neutralize the red without going darker.
Java gel stain over the red would give a toned-down dark mahogany. A stain that tends greenish would show more brown (red+green=brown), but it's somewhat riskier if the toning doesn't take evenly. Unfortunately, it's going to be a whole lot of work to remove the stain with no guarantee of success. IIRC the sedona has earth pigments which can't be bleached out, must be removed mechanically, i.e.: sanding or scraping, if they are deep in the wood.
