same paint, different room

rara_avis21January 7, 2011

I painted the bedroom BM Philipsburg Blue earlier this year. Thankfully I'm in love with the colour as DH thoughtfully bought 2 gallons. We ended up only needing 1.

Ever my thrifty self, I wanted to use some of the leftover paint to paint the 'den' (aka my library/pilates/reading/escape/computer room) but I don't particularly want two rooms exactly the same colour (is it only me that has this problem???).

Due to budget constraints I can't afford another gallon to avoid this, but might be able to splurge for a quart for an accent.

Anyone have any suggestions for an accent colour that will work with Philipsburg Blue? Its the BM Aura matte if that makes any difference (DH loathes shiny finishes).

Thank you!!

If I were you I'd head over to the Home Decorating forum and ask this question. It gets a lot of traffic and the people there are very nice and helpful.

If it were me, I'd wait and save up the money until I could do the room all one color. I think accent walls look best when there's an architectural feature to show off. What other colors are in your home?

I'm not familiar with that color but did a quick search on

Here's some complimentary colors it came up with.

If you're not familiar with the site, or for some reason the link doesn't work right here's what I did.
Go to
From commercial tints to RBG (upper right)
Type in your color name and use the drop down to pick the brand/collection (BM Color Preview)
Click on "harmonies" and it will bring up a bunch of color themes.
I picked theme 1 which is gray and clicked on "Get commercial tints"
Use your drop down to pick your paint brand/collection (BM Color Preview) and hit start
It will give you four color names that are similar. I'd take a look at Gray Cashmere. I tried to copy and paste the link but it wouldn't bring up the colors when I tested it out.

Hope this helps!

If the rooms have different exposures and different furniture and carpet, the paint will not look the same color.
