Glue the 6 panel door before painting?

dancingqueengwJanuary 28, 2011

I've been working on sanding the bathroom door and also the cabinets in preparation for painting. The door is a six panel and the panels in two places move around a LOT. Since the inside of the door will be painted but the outside is stained wood should I glue the panels in place so they don't shift around before I paint? Is there a reason they need the movement? Just use regular wood glue?

The floating panels are there to allow for expansion and contraction of the wood. If you paint the doors, there may be some maintenance down the road when the panels move. I usually caulk the panels in place by running a small bead of caulk around the entire panel and smoothing it down with a wet finger. Yes, this defeats the purpose of the floating panel, but a painted 6 panel door with floating panels looks pretty bad with those gaps inside the panels. A high quality caulk with withstand some movement because it has some flex.

When assembling floating panel doors, I put one spot of glue in the center top/bottom of each panel. That keeps the panel centered while the edges shrink and expand seasonally. If you glue at the edges, the panel will split.
