Moravian Pottery & Tile Works Tiles?

kerrygwNovember 4, 2008

Hi,

Is there anyone out there with knowledge of Moravian Tile Works tiles? We just bought an early 1900s home with an arts & crafts feel, and I've confirmed that the fireplace is a Moravian Tile Works "narrative" fireplace. What I can't figure out is how old it is - it's a pattern (the 4 seasons) that is replicated by the company today but it's also one of their original designs, so I'm trying to figure out if it is possibly original to the house. But I have no idea how to date the tiles, or how to clean them, or put a value to them (if they have any). Anyone who has any ideas, I'd love to hear them! (Here's more information regarding the Moravian Tile Works if you are interested... http://www.tiles.org/pages/mptw/mercer.htm)

Thanks!

Might you email the company and ask them for hints as to care and dating?

We used to have Pewabic Pottery tile, which I think is similar to Moravian. I cleaned ours with no ammonia windex or a mix of liquid dish soap and water. If you have a glaze on your tile, this should work.

Have you seen this link? You might want to phone the curator if they don't reply to email.

Here is a link that might be useful: Mercer and Moravian tile

I hadn't seen that link - thanks! Yeah, I need to pick up the phone - email is just so much easier for me most of the time that I take it for granted that it works for everyone!
