traditional gray front porch color

Historic house owners... what is a good gray paint color for a traditional Victorian front porch. We are considering Sherwin Williams "Dorian Gray", but concerned it will turn out too light. I've misjudged most of my exterior colors so far... trying to get this part right.

What part of the porch are you painting? The floor? The railing and balusters?

Sky Blue is traditional for porch ceilings, a medium gray for floors.

In Moss' Victorian Exterior Decoration, he advises medium gray rather than a lighter or darker shade because the others will show dirt easier. If sky blue doesn't suit you, another option was to paint the ceiling in the body color of the house.

Looking at his paint chart, I'd say go with Oyster Gray or Shadow Gray--he lists those names under Sherwin-Williams, but the color numbers are BM-80-19 and BM-80-5 respectively. The next column is for Benjamin-Moore paints, so maybe the page is misprinted. I'm sure Sherwin Williams can match the colors, even if they are BMs.
