Re-cycling glass front door-calling all carpenters

wangshanOctober 10, 2005

I have one of those old front doors that has a big pane of glass in the middle..about 5x2 feet of glass. I want reuse the door but have my carpenter put in some wood to make it look more like a arts and crafts style, with a custom stained glass window. Because it would be a custom size (90x36 and I don't want to shorten the opening) and the carpenter would work for free labor , I thought I might be able to get a nice door for less than new. Has anyone else done anything like this?

Look around the edge frame part of glass if you see screws you can remove it.If not a good carpenter probably could do it.

Never done it, but don't see a reason why it could not be done.

That's what i thought..I'll have to get busy with it and show the finished product. That article on refinishing front doors in the recent This Old House magazine inspired me. did anyone else see it?
